what did you do when the world was unraveling?
by
marcia starck

My great grandchildren ask me in a dream,
What did you do when the world was unraveling?

I tell them that I went to Avebury,
to the standing stones;
I stood against each of the stones,
felt their coolness, their solidity, their strength.
I walked the circle of female stones;
bathed in their gentleness and compassion.
I walked the circle of masculine stones;
allowed their power and strength to embrace me.
Where the two circles met
I planted my feet deeply in the soil
rooted like a tree that has lived
for thousands of years.
Watching over this kingdom of ancient stones,
I felt the harmonious energy of the elementals
in my own body.

I left the stone circles,
traveled east to Spain,
gazed at the Gaudi cathedral
in Barcelona;
its many spires reaching to the sky,
piercing the cosmos
for some infinite wisdom
to bring back to earth.
I bought new shoes in Barcelona,
so I could dance all night
with my feet on the earth.
I told my great grandchildren
I would dance at my eighty fifth birthday
with my Spanish shoes.
Then I went to the French countryside,
smelled each flower—the purple ones
and the pink ones and the golden ones.
I brought home armfuls of lavender.
To remember the sweetness of life
is a gift of the flowers.

When I arrived home
to the mountains of New Mexico,
I stood in the rain to purify
my body and
watched the lightning across
the Sangre de Cristos.
Thunder roared and
winds howled as I prepared
to sleep in my own bed.
I dreamt of my great grandchildren
and promised them I will
continue my journey—
I will bring peace while
the world is unraveling.
