spearheading daylight
by
luke hettel

I drove across the land
The landscape entered me
Praying as I sped over rattlers
Fuel running low

The landscape entered me
Distant lights sat and watched
Fuel running low
Behind me death lumbered, quiet and unwavering

Distant lights sat and watched
Flickering in and out
Behind me death lumbered, quiet and unwavering
Birthing an incessant stream of shadow

Flickering in and out
I resorted to stimulants and cigarettes
Birthing an incessant stream of shadow
Mixing with the swiftly fading sunlight

I resorted to stimulants and cigarettes
Napping between moments
Mixing with the swiftly fading sunlight
Bible in hand, gas pedal scraping the floor

Napping between moments
I drove across the land
Bible in hand, gas pedal scraping the floor
Praying as I sped over rattlers
