If I Had Some Spare Time I Would
      by Debbi Brody

Separate the strands of red and blue,
unweave the color purple.

Watch the first whales walk out
of the ocean and back in again.

Taste clear trumpet flower nectar
from a hummingbird’s tongue.

Fall through grey porch boards, and watch
pale vines grow through basement walls.

Cling to the underside of a table
or slither quietly between white sheets.

Eat burnt toast without scraping
it in the sink, no butter, no jam.

Read a book backwards,
swallow some sand.
