Ordinary Time
      by Enid Howarth

I love you sitting at the kitchen table,
morning sun spilling over the smoke tree,
chewing your daily ration of news
while I grind coffee,
slice an orange, make toast.

I love ordinary time with you,
when nothing happens, or needs to,
at the close of day, for instance,
when work is ended,
and only the moon demands attention.

On an ordinary day we might
paint a wall, plant a tree,
cut the grass, mend a table,
have some lunch and
come to making love
tasting of summer and salt,
then sleep
and wake
to late afternoon shadows,
sunset, evening,
and the commonplace magic
of the night.
