My Friends
      by William Houston

Steve has a forest green van and my neighbor Sonya drives
A zippy little red sports model and the pony-tailed
Girl who walks her Gordon setter, Rodney, by my house
Drives a shiny silver car that looks like it is going
Downhill but

I am indisposed to or incapable of interpreting
Details of design to model and year much less country
Of origin as clues to exact identity so
I wave at all passing drivers of green vans zippy
Little red sports cars and going downhill even
Uphill silver bullets just in case.

Yesterday an angry gray old man in a dark green van lost
His scowl as he wondered who the hell
I was and a guy with a dark goatee in a flashy red mini-
Convertible was disconcerted by a sign of recognition
(mistaken) from my dirty black-cherry aging
Voyageur and the driver of a postmodern silver
Quite stunning expensive-looking something responded
With a half-hearted wave and startled
Blue-eyed double take.

So many more friends than I ever thought I'd have
At my age!
