Resurrection Lily
      by Newlyn Allison

I step into the bathroom to be alone,
But you, my three-year-old, don't understand
And appear pink before me
Like the resurrection lily that bloomed in my sunflowers.

You don't understand
Why I scowl and speak sharply, stiff as a stalk.
Like the resurrection lily blooming in my sunflowers,
Your pink face blossoms: I'm here! Aren't you glad?

I scowl and speak sharply, stiff as a stalk
And say, "Stand over there. Go."
Your pink face still blossoms: I'm here! Aren't you glad?
As you skip into my bedroom, singing.

I say, "Stand over there, Judith. Go,"
When you shine in the dim light of my lair.
So you skip into my bedroom singing,
Bearing your bright love from me.

You shine in the dim light of my lair,
Blossoming like the lily.
But don't bear your bright love from me--
Though I say I want to be alone.
